Nyonya cooking
is a specialty derived from the
culture of inter marriages between the Straits Chinese and Malays
and were passed from one generation to the other with very little
changes.
Since this cuisine is a fusion food originated from the mixed of
Chinese and Malay, it still contains many of the
traditions of Chinese cooking and Malay spices and herbs. To make it
simple, you may also said that Nyonya cooking is very much prepared
in the Chinese way but added a lot of spiciness and blending
of spices. Besides the Chinese and Malay characteristic, Nyonyas
drew inspiration from Thai cooking styles, like the preference for
sweet and sour flavor, piping hot chilies, fragrant herbs, and the
pungent sambal belachan which make up this unique cuisine in this
part of the world.
